Madonna Truth or Dare Budget Beauty Pick Perfume Review

In bed with Rubio

Madonna Truth or Dare* Eau de Parfum is surprisingly better than you would think for a celebrity fragrance. I would not call it a masterpiece but well worth a try if you like creamy tuberose or gardenia fragrances. Coty has discontinued Truth or Dare. It is sold now at ridiciously low prices. My back up bottle was € 8,59.

Truth or Dare was the first fragrance Madonna launched.* It was inspired by the 1948 Piguet classic Fracas. Fracas was said to be worn by Madonna’s mother. I do not find Truth or Dare to be very daring as it is neither indolic nor carnal. To some it is a gourmand floral due to the lush creamy vanilla and caramel amber base. The so called addiction accord.

Truth or Dare behaves quite decently on my skin starting with a fruity delicious ripe juicy pear note to continue as a creamy tuberose and gardenia, then moving quite quickly into a slightly but not overly sweet vanilla and carameled amber to end as a barely notice able soapy scent. Reading bloggers’ reviews I did not find others who scented the ripe pear note in the beginning. Some smelled white lily at the heart which luckily, I did not get. Truth or Dare wears quite close to the skin and can only be scented for a few hours. The trick to really enjoy it, is to reapply during the day and spray luxuriously. I like to wear Truth or Dare on warmer summer days.

What image do I get: a glamorous fur coat and a string of pearls like the lady (and wife of) on this Kees van Dongen painting.

What does it do? Makes me feel glamorous, outgoing, mature and centered.

Given its price and quality I would recommend Truth or Dare to those who like creamy tuberose, white florals or are new to the smell of tuberose and want to experience its lushness before moving on to other more expensive and classic tuberose fragrances like Fracas.

Try Truth or Dare for this bargain price!

Habit Rouge L’Eau Perfume Review Budget Beauty Pick

Habit Rouge L'Eau

A beautiful fragrance does not have to be expensive. One of the fragrances I recently found on my search for affordable budget friendly fragrances is Habit Rouge L’Eau.*

Habit Rouge L’Eau starts off with a fresh incredibly crisp citrus bitter orange note. Powdery iris appears after a few minutes to dissappear quickly and not return. Clean jasmine which reminds of expensive soap is to be smelled later. The longevity of the citrus is amazing as it happily lasts a whole hour on my skin. Which is one of the reasons I like to wear this fragrance. An ugly chemical off note appears which could be a side effect of the hazelnut note when this note becomes noticable. Airy luminous clean musk with a vanilla touch closely lingers on my skin for the next 4 to 5 hours to disappear and return on and off afterwards.  As a whole Habit Rouge L’Eau stays close to the skin.

If Habit Rouge L’Eau would have a colour it would be white and as texture high quality recently washed and ironed expensive high quality cotton.

Who would wear this? And for what occasion?  Habit Rouge L’Eau leans towards masculine but can easily be worn by man and woman. All the bodily (read sex) appeal which can be so prominent in other Guerlain classic fragrances like Shalimar or Heritage has been left out of this fragrance. It is a good fragrance if you have a job interview or as office wear. Wearing it will make you feel very well dressed in an elegant finely cut business suit.

What does it do? Habit Rouge L’Eau could be a good choice if you want to concentrate and focus without any distractions to get a serious job done. I find it quite calming as well.

To me it feels like all notes are very well kept into place with incredible restraint which reflects on the fragrance making it unimaginative. Although nicely balanced and well made I find it can be a bit too lineair. But for its bargain price at discount stores it is worthwhile to try if you want an uncomplicated and office friendly fragrance.  If you are looking for a good introduction to more complex and interesting Guerlain fragrances like the original Shalimar or Habit Rouge this would be a good way to start. It would make an excellent gift for this purpose as well.

Habit Rouge EAZ

In short: Habit Rouge L’Eau is an invigorating, luminous, elegant and uncomplicated fragrance well worth a try. But at times and to some it could be too linear and feel too restrained. It can be an excellent introduction to other classic Guerlain fragrances like Shalimar and Habit Rouge.

Did you try this Habit Rouge flanker L’eau? Would you like to try it?

*I am starting a new topic on this website, the Budget Beauty Pick of the Week. My aim is to find and write about affordable budget friendly fragrances. One of the first ones is Habit Rouge L’Eau Eau de Toilette. This is obviously a flanker of the classic Guerlain Habit Rouge. I am not a fan of the original Habit Rouge as the citrus top note turns sour on my skin but I really enjoyed wearing the L’Eau version these past few weeks.

Lavender oil: Top 3 ways to use it at home

Lavender

Lavender oil can be used at home in three different ways, to repel mosquitoes, moths and with burns.

While looking for natural ways to make mosquito and moth repellents I came across lavender essential oil*. Lavender essential oil is an oil I always have at home. So I looked it up how I could best use it to combat mosquitoes and I found a recepe to mix it. I mixed it with jojoba oil and gave it a try by applying it on my skin before going to bed. The mixture was 30 mls of jojoba oil with 30 drops of lavender oil. I haven’t had much trouble with mosquito bites ever since but I have to admit I am not a mosquito magnet and I live in the Netherlands so I don’t have to use DEET as protection against diseases.

Looking for a natural and economic way to repel moth I read lavender is a good oil to use as well. I put a few drops of lavender oil onto cotton pads and placed them in the closet. It seems like it is doing its job. Citronella is supposed to do the trick as well but I have found its scent too aggressive in the cupboard.

LavenderWhen in college I often burned my hands while cooking and I used to have burning marks on my wrist which took a long time to heal. I burned my wrist a short while ago and treated it with neat lavender oil after cooling it under the tap with cold water. The burn healed very quickly within a few days.  After the first day I continued to treat the burn with the lavender and jojoba oil mixture I mentioned above and it only took a few days to heal completely without leaving a scar. The burn was not severe and it was not an open wound. Otherwise I would not have used lavender oil. But this way of using lavender essential oil was very successful.

Conclusion: Using lavender oil (lavender officinalis) to repel mosquitoes in a mixture with jojoba oil, applying them on cotton pads to put into a cupboard and using neat lavender oil for burns to me has been quite succesfull and I intend to continue using it.

Do you like to use natural remedies at home? If so, which one is your favorite?

*Lavender essential oil: if buying lavender essential oil look for lavendula officinalis if used for burns.
